Tome is basically D2 in roguelike form and the options are bewildering for a beginner. DCSS is easy to get started in and will teach the RL fundamentals. The flow of DCSS is a lot more simple too. Just keep going down, check out branches, etc. The Tome overworld is uh, less clear. The main difference between them is TOME really shines on its combat and ADOM really shines on its depth of interactions (with the world, with items, etc). TOME doesn't offer too much outside of questing and killing, while ADOM doesn't offer much for combat outside of bumping into things.
